EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

CBAM certificate cost calculator

Certificate price€82.32/ tCO₂e

How is the CBAM certificate cost calculated?

The cost is the number of certificates due multiplied by the CBAM certificate price, and one certificate covers one tonne of CO₂e embedded in the goods.

The calculator takes the embedded emissions of the goods and multiplies them by the quantity imported. It then deducts the free allocation still granted for the same goods that year and the carbon price paid in the country of origin, net of rebates or other compensation. What is left is the number of certificates, one for each tonne of CO₂e, priced at the latest CBAM certificate price.

The free allocation shrinks every year until it disappears, so the same import needs more certificates each year. See the phase-in by year

Should the estimate use default values or verified data?

Use the producer’s verified data when you have it: default values include a mark-up and usually lead to more certificates.

Without data from the producer, the estimate uses the default values the EU publishes for each good and country of origin, increased by that year’s mark-up. With verified actual emissions from the producer’s installation, it uses those figures instead, which usually means fewer certificates.

What does the estimate not cover?

It prices a single import at the latest published certificate price. The certificates you actually surrender follow from your annual CBAM declaration and the emissions verified behind it, so use the result for planning, not as a figure to declare. See how the certificate price is set
